el potrero

today is the day
the wind is sighing
cottonwood puffs
like copal smoke
into the mouth of the land
is lifting up iridescent
families of ducklings
whipping silver spears
summer coming
bursting
joy

today the breeze
brushes the copper mane
of a horse
pausing
in the green
is asking flicker birds
to waltz cumulus
with the
clouds

today is the day
the Tewa hair flying
deerskin moccasins
Tsi Mayoh
Bernardo Abeyta eclipses
Lord God
talking willows
and Esquipulus
appears

today the pilgrims come
from so far
hoping
to breathe
the earth
delirious
their bones
with the
wind
